About The Speaker

Dr. Macpherson graduated from University of Ottawa in 1985, interned at the Royal Columbian Hospital, spent three years as a medical officer at the National Defense Medical Centre in Ottawa, and eventually completed anaesthesia training at UBC in 1992.  She worked in Prince George, then Maple Ridge BC, with locum stints in Whitehorse YT and Mount Isa QLD, Australia.

In 2004, she returned to training as a PGY6 in Palliative Medicine at UBC and received a Diploma from the American Board of Hospice Palliative Medicine.  She has since practiced in Fraser Health (BC), Regina, Calgary, and even briefly returned to Whitehorse. She developed and helped present three palliative workshops in Ghana in 2013 and 2015 and subsequently did online teaching of the family practice residents for the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

She has been involved in teaching and/or developing clinical material for the Canadian Society of Palliative Medicine, Pallium Canada, Victoria Hospice, the BC Centre for Palliative Care, the UBC Division of Palliative Care, Fraser Health, and the Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice.

Once Palliative Medicine was recognized as a subspecialty in Canada, she passed the first ever Royal College exams in November 2019.  The best studying was done while sipping fancy umbrella drinks in the South Pacific on a previous Sea Courses cruise.
