Dr. Gillis graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland Medical School in 1982 and completed a psychiatry residency at the University of Ottawa in 1995. She is a former family physician who has worked in Canada, the United States, and New Zealand.
She is currently the Interim VP Medical Affairs at The Royal Health Care Group, Ottawa. From 2009 to 2017, Dr. Gillis served as chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa. She has worked for over 20 years at The Ottawa Hospital where she recently completed a term as head of the Department of Psychiatry.
She has been a national leader in psychiatry education starting with serving as Psychiatry Residency Training Director for the University of Ottawa in 1999. She joined the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Exam Board in Psychiatry in 2001 and from 2004-2008 she was national Chair of the Psychiatry English Exam Board at the RCPSC and a member of the Working Group on a National Strategy for enhancing Postgraduate Education in Psychiatry. Dr. Gillis was the Chair of the RCPSC Examination Committee from 2009-2016 and was a member of the RCPSC Council from 2011- February 2017. She was Chair of the RCPSC Corporate Assessment Committee and member of the RCPSC Committee on Specialty Education from 2016 -2019.
Dr. Gillis is a board director with the Mach-Gaensslen Foundation. Her previous board experience includes the RCPSC Council, The Ottawa Hospital Academic Medicine Organization, the University of Ottawa Brain and Mind Research Institute Advisory Board, and the uOttawa Institute for Mental Health Research Royal Ottawa Health Care Group.
