Dr. Judy Shiau is the Medical Director of LEAF Weight Management Clinic®, a community-based multidisciplinary bariatric clinic in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (www.leafwmc.com). LEAF stand for Live.Eat.Activity.Forever®. These words set the goals and principles that people living with excess weight can follow. As a General Internist with the certification of Diplomate of the American Board in Obesity Medicine, Dr. Shiau is an Assistant Professor and Bariatric Medicine Fellowship program director for the University of Ottawa, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and trains future generation physicians how to better help their patients with overweight or obesity. Dr. Shiau is the author of the Post-Operative Management for Bariatric Surgery chapter for the 2020 Canadian Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines. She is also the current President of the Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter of Obesity Canada and Treasurer for the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Stephen Glazer holds certification in Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine from the University of Toronto in Ontario. He is also certified as a specialist in Sleep Medicine through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. He has a strong interest in perioperative risk assessment.
Dr. Glazer is both a provincial and a national leader in Bariatric Medicine. In 2010, Dr. Glazer became the Medical Director for both the Bariatric Surgical and Medical Program at Humber River Hospital, a dedicated center of excellence for the management of Obesity in Ontario. He is an active board member of the Ontario Bariatric Network, sitting on numerous subcommittees, including being the Vice-Chair of the OBN Medical Program Task Force. He is involved in establishing the standards of care for patients in Ontario participating in both surgical and medical approaches for weight loss. In 2012, he was among one of the first Canadian physicians who successfully completed the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) Certification examination and is a diplomat of the ABOM.
In 2019, Dr Glazer became the President of the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons (CABPS), an national organization representing Canadian specialists interested in the treatment of obesity for the purposes of maintenance and improvement for the standards of Bariatric care in Canada, supporting both primary and continuing educational programs, knowledge, research and developing policies and new ideas in the areas of clinical care, education, and research in Bariatric Medicine and Surgery. This obesity conference is co-sponsored by CABPS.
Dr Glazer participates in multiple clinical research projects and publications. He is the author of the Pre-Operative Management for Bariatric Surgery chapter for the 2020 Canadian Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines. but his greatest enjoyment is teaching and interreacting with other health care providers via lecturing at conferences or other educational venues. His enthusiasm and passion for the field of Obesity Medicine and the care of patients living with obesity is blatantly obvious and he hopes infectious to others.
Dr. Sandy Van is a licensed Family Physician and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She is the founder and medical director of Lifestyle 360, a Weight Management Program located in downtown Toronto. She dedicates her practice to helping individuals achieve sustainable weight loss with use of psychotherapy and medical management. Dr. Van offers a unique voice for the medical community regarding behavioural treatment for obesity and has participated in speaking engagements at the national level and as an expert contributor in television media. Dr. Van received her medical degree and residency training from The University of Toronto.
Jennifer Brown is a registered dietitian with The Ottawa Hospital Bariatric Centre of Excellence and is the provincial lead for the eConsult Champlain LHIN in bariatric nutrition. She received a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis Xavier University in Human Nutrition and a Masters from the University of Ottawa in Human Kinetics exploring appetite-related measures and peripheral hormone changes in weight regain after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Jennifer is currently a steering committee member and author on the 2020 Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Adults with Obesity; a national representative for Dietitians of Canada and the Canadian Obesity Advocacy Network as part of the Obesity Policy Engagement Network initiative; chair of the Ontario Bariatric Network (OBN) Dietitian Working Group; education committee member and speaker for the OBN Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) project and an executive member of the bariatric surgery subgroup for the Dietitians of Canada – DOC network. Jennifer has a passion for bariatric care and obesity research providing peer reviews and consultations for Canadian and international journals, agencies and organizations. She has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences/scientific meetings, university lectures, authored and published obesity-related research and is involved with advocacy efforts to reduce weight stigma in professional education and healthcare delivery.
This course is designed for family physicians, specialists, and allied health care professionals. The aim is to provide evidence-based material, as well as practical and relevant clinical pearls that will be easy to implement into one’s own medical practice. Conference attendees will be invited to complete a pre-course Needs Assessment to assist the faculty with the development of their presentations.
