Dr. Bell is a family physician and clinical researcher in Toronto, Canada. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto and on the active staff of the Humber River Regional Hospital. He is a recipient of the Canadian College of Family Physicians Award of Excellence. His activities include: Past Chair and Current Primary Panel – Canadian Cardiovascular Society Antiplatelet Guideline Committee (Dr. Bell is the only primary care physician to ever chair a CCS guideline committee); Primary Panel – Canadian Cardiovascular Society Atrial Fibrillation Guideline Committee; Thrombosis Canada – Executive Council; Member American Society of Bone and Mineral Research; Canadian Stroke Network Professional Development Committee; Canadian Medical Association Journal – Peer Reviewer. Dr. Bell’s involvement in continuing medical education includes the development and presentation of many national projects. He has served as faculty and chair of countless committees and advisory boards dedicated to serving the common interests of the medical profession and the public. His research, commentaries and letters have been presented and published internationally.
Dr. Michael Heffernan is a staff cardiologist at the Oakville Trafalgar Hospital. He obtained his honours bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Genetic Engineering from McMaster University in 1987. He then successfully pursued a Ph.D. in the department of Medical Genetics at the University of Toronto. Dr. Heffernan completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at the University of Toronto. He accepted a staff Cardiology position at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in 2001 and is currently the Director of the Oakville Hospital Heart Function Clinic. Dr. Heffernan is also a Director of Oakville Cardiologists and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster University. Dr. Heffernan’s research activities have been widely published in academic and peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine. His current research interests include acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and dyslipidemia.
This course is designed for family physicians, specialists, and allied health care professionals. The aim is to provide evidence-based material, as well as practical and relevant clinical pearls that will be easy to implement into one’s own medical practice. Conference attendees will be invited to complete a pre-course Needs Assessment to assist the faculty with the development of their presentations.
