Claudia Black’s seminal work with children impacted by substance abuse in the late 1970s created the foundation for the adult child movement. Today she is a renowned author and trainer internationally recognized for her pioneering and contemporary work with family systems and addictive disorders. Claudia Black designs and presents training workshops and seminars to professional audiences in the field of family service, mental health, and addictive disorders.

Claudia’ pioneering contributions are many:
•  She would be the first to name and coin the dysfunctional family rules, “Don’t Talk, Don’t   Trust, Don’t Feel.”
•  She described the phenomena of delayed stress, emotional trauma, the child’s denial process, the phenomena of “looking good” kids as they relate to growing up with addiction, and hence the
meaning and phraseology of “Adult Child of Alcoholics”.
•  She utilized art therapy in the context of group work with young children that offered a model for children’s programs for the past three plus decades.
•  She broke the barrier and openly discussed physical and sexual abuse in the context of addictive families.

Her work, her passion has been ageless and offers a foundation for those impacted by addiction to recover, and gives our professional field a library of both depth and breadth She is Senior Fellow and Clinical Architect of the Claudia Black Young Adult Center at The Meadows in Arizona. She serves on the Advisory Board for the National Association of Children of Addiction, and the Advisory Council of the Eluna Foundation.  Claudia is the author of several well-known books; the latest title being Unspoken Legacy: Addressing the Impact of Trauma and Addiction within the Family.

Dr. Jennifer Melamed (MBChB, Med BSc., ABAM Diplomate, FASAM, FIAIME, CCSAM, CISAM, CSAT Candidate, MROCC), is a family physician licensed to practice within British Columbia. She qualified as a Certified Medicolegal Evaluator in January 2022 and was recognized as a Fellow of the International Academy of Independent Medical Evaluators in 2023. Dr. Melamed received recognition as a Family Physician Specialist after attaining a Certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine from the College of Family Physicians in 2019. After practicing as a family physician in British Columbia from 1992 to 2000, She began to focus on addictions and pain management. Since 2004, her practice has been fully devoted to addictions and pain management. She worked as a consulting physician at the Cordova and Vancouver Detox Centers in Vancouver. She prescribes Opioid-Assisted Treatment at the Alliance Clinic in Surrey, British Columbia.
Dr. Melamed is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM) and a member of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM); and was the British Columbia board representative to the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM). In 2006, Dr. Melamed completed both the ISAM and ASAM certification examinations and have received Board Certification in Addiction Medicine in the United States. In November 2013, she completed the ABIME (American Board of Independent Medical Examiners) certification course.

Mel Pohl, MD, DFASAM is the Senior Medical Consultant, Pain Recovery Program, The Pointe Malibu. He is the former Chief Medical Officer of Las Vegas Recovery Center (LVRC) and was a major force in developing LVRC’s Chronic Pain Recovery Program. He is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, (ABAM), and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). He is a member of the planning committee for ASAM’s Annual “Common Threads, Pain and Addiction” Course. Dr. Pohl is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He was elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® from 2009 to present. In 2022, he received the Father Joseph Martin Professional Excellence Award. He starred in a special for PBS titled “The Pain Antidote” which aired nationally in 2016.

● Pain Recovery: How to Find Balance and Reduce Suffering from Chronic Pain (Central Recovery Press, 2009).

His newest book with Kathy Ketcham is The Pain Antidote, Stop Suffering from Chronic Pain, Avoid Addiction to Painkillers, and Reclaim Your Life, (DaCapo Life Long, 2015).

From Theory to Practice - Treating Addictions, Impacted Families and Chronic Pain

CME AWAY® by Sea Courses is pleased to invite you to a 7-night Norwegian Fjords CME program on board the Celebrity Silhouette, July 28 - August 4, 2024. The program is titled “From Theory to Practice; Treating Addiction, Impacted Families and Chronic Pain. The presenters for this CME are: Dr. Claudia Black, Dr. Jennifer Melamed and Dr. Mel Pohl. The faculty have developed a program that will appeal to both family physicians and specialists. It is designed to be evidence based with interactivity and attendee participation strongly encouraged. Dr. Claudia Black a holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Social Psychology from Columbia Pacific University. She is very involved with children and families affected by addiction. Among many interests, Claudia is the Clinical Architect of the Claudia Black Center for Young Adults. She is one of the original founders and serves on the Advisory Board for the National Association of Children of Addiction and the Advisory Council of the Eluna Foundation and its development of Camp Mariposa, a camp for children impacted by addiction. She will cover effects of trauma and addiction on families, relapse during recover and ‘toxic shame’. Dr. Jennifer Melamed is a family physician with a certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine from the College of Family Physicians. She practices in British Columbia and will cover addiction topics such as alcohol, gambling, sex and opioid use disorder. Dr. Mel Pohl is a Physician and Senior Medical Consultant, Pain Recovery Program, The Pointe Malibu. He has authored and co-authored several books on chronic pain. Dr. Pohl will cover topics on chronic pain such as helping patients without opioids, mindfulness to enhance patient care and pose a discuss ‘is chronic pain a brain disease’. Dr Alan Brookstone will moderate this CME. He is a Family Physician, IT consultant for Electronic Medical Records and Health information technology. For the last 10 years he has practiced in Surrey BC and has limited his practice to managing patients with opioid use disorder. Detailed Port Descriptions

Day 1        Rotterdam, Netherlands

Europe’s largest port city today had humble beginnings as a fishing village in the 13th century. Now, it's a lively, thriving metropolis that's home to a multicultural population. The Euromast observation tower provides a great panoramic view of the city and more, especially some of the fine and striking architecture on the Wilhelminapier. The first viewing platform takes you to 100 meters, then you can go a further 85 meters if you’re brave. Or, visit one of the many top-class museums, such as Boijmans, Van Beuningen or the Kunsthal in Museum Park.

Day 2          At Sea

While at sea, take the time to recharge before the next adventure. Lounge by the pool, be spoiled at the spa, taste the delicacies or explore the venues onboard, until we arrive at the next amazing destination.

Day 3          Molde, Norway

Discover Molde, a charming city in Norway known among locals as “the town of roses.” In Molde, you’ll find yourself surrounded by spectacular landscapes, blooming gardens, and the sound of jazz music,  Hike up to the Varden Viewpoint and take in the magnificent scenery of the Molde Panorama, where 222 snow-capped mountains and the sparkling fjord in the distance are sure to take your breath away. Explore some of the nearby islands and natural wonders, such as the ridge of Romsdalseggen and the winding road of Trollstigen, an impressive roadway that is part of the Norwegian Scenic Route.  

Day 4           Olden, Norway

Much of this picturesque town, located at the tip of the Nordfjord, looks as though it is straight out of the 17th century. Its many historic sites include Olden Old Church, built in 1759 on the site of the original stave church dating back to the 14th century, and the Singer Home, former residence of American painter William Singer. Nature lover? Explore the lush, verdant scenery of Lake Olden and experience its tranquility on a relaxing sightseeing cruise. Want something more adventurous? On your Europe cruise, trek through the Norwegian wild to Briksdal Glacier, an arm of the largest glacier in continental Europe. You'll hike along river paths and see gentle waterfalls created by the melting ice.

Day 5            Alesund, Norway

Alesund’s turrets, spires, and other whimsical art nouveau architectural touches give the town its distinctive, fairytale-like character. On your cruise to Alesund, don’t forget to visit scenic Geiranger Fjord. One of Norway’s best-known attractions is just a stone’s throw from this quaint little town. Ages of glacial erosion have given way to sculpted, towering mountainsides upon which flow numerous, dramatic waterfalls. There is no shortage of nature to stand in awe of at this favorite Norway attraction. To fully capture the depth of beauty in this seaside town, a jaunt up Mount Aksla is in order. From there, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of this colorful, magical place. Drive the famous Path of Trolls, a roadway that was literally blasted out of the mountainside. Travel back to Viking days and discover exotic marine life on this exploration of the Saga Islands. Begin on Giske, where you’ll walk in the footsteps of Viking legends then continue to the island of Godoy to visit the Atlantic Sea Park. Built directly into the rugged landscape, it features massive aquariums teeming with colorful fish and sea life.

Day 6             Stavenger, Norway

Whether you prefer outdoor adventure or ancient history, a Stavanger cruise offers a wide array of treasures to discover. Its charming streets climb from the waterfront and are dotted with timber homes painted in wonderfully vibrant colors. The city is a mix of old and new, charming and stylish with an eclectic collection of merchant shops, cafes and historic museums and churches. The Stavanger Cathedral is the country's oldest cathedral, having been built between 1100 and 1125.  An easy day hike on Pulpit Rock, the cliff rising over 1800 feet above the sea, offers gorgeous views of the Lysefjord and the surrounding lush terrain. Dining options in the area include outstanding fish and mussels, with French American, Japanese, and Indian influences found throughout the city.
