Nicola Macpherson of Maple Ridge, BC has been teaching for Sea Courses since 2008.
She graduated from Ottawa in 1985, interned at the Royal Columbian Hospital, spent three years at the National Defense Medical Centre (two as a surgical resident and one as a medical resident), and eventually completed anaesthesia training at UBC in 1992. She worked in Prince George, then Maple Ridge, BC, with locum stints in Whitehorse YT, and Mount Isa, QLD, Australia. In 2004-05, she completed a PGY6 year at UBC. Since then, she has worked in Fraser Health BC, Regina SK, Calgary AB, and Whitehorse.
She helped develop and present three 2-day palliative courses in Ghana (West Africa) in 2013 and 2015, and still does online teaching to the family practice residents for the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.
In November 2019, she passed the first ever Royal College subspecialty exams in Palliative Medicine, 27 years after her first Fellowship. The best studying was done during a Sea Courses cruise, sipping tropical “umbrella drinks” from coconuts on a beach in the South Pacific.
Since retiring from clinical work, she continues to teach and do projects with several local, provincial, and national organizations. Each July, she releases an update of “Dr. Nicola Macpherson’s Little Black eBook of Palliative Pearls”. In her spare time, she is a volunteer sewist with Days for Girls Canada, sewing reusable menstrual health kits so that girls in underprivileged areas can stay in school, complete their education and hope for a better future. In November 2022, she joined a team of Canadian women who provided menstrual health education and distributed 1000 kits in Peru.
She is also on the award-winning set-building team for Theatre in the Country (Langley), and in 2023 was promoted to locum props manager.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 | July 19, 2024 | Seattle, Washington
Seattle is a young city, but it's short history is part of the landscape and charm. Cruise from Seattle and check out the Hiram Chittenden Locks in the Ballard neighborhood — this impressive feat of engineering passed its first ship through in 1916, and today, it's one of the busiest lock systems in the U.S. Then, stroll through the nearby Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens, an English-style landscape garden with over 1,500 varieties of plants. Or head to Gas Works Park, on the grounds of the former Seattle Gas Light Company: This former business is now a prime vantage point to view the Seattle skyline. And don't miss the famous Space Needle: From the top, you can take in clear views of the bay, the Cascade Mountains and Mount Rainier.
Day 2 | July 20, 2024 | At Sea
While at sea, take the time to recharge before the next adventure. Lounge by the pool, be spoiled at the spa, taste the delicacies or explore the venues on-board, until we arrive at the next amazing destination.
Day 3 | July 21, 2024 | Juneau, Alaska
You can’t get to Juneau easily without a sprint by air or by sea. But once you arrive you’ll find majestic views and rich culture in every corner. With its snowcapped mountains, misty rainforests, massive glaciers and bounty of wildlife, Alaska’s remote state capital is the perfect place to dive into nature. Framed by Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts, the city’s picturesque downtown area offers centuries-old bars, boutique shops and historic landmarks. For a taste of the local culture, visit the historic district and the Alaska State Museum. And for outdoor thrills, you can take your pick of activities ranging from whale watching in Auke Bay Harbor to tundra trekking over Mendenhall Glacier, and even try your hand at gold panning in Last Chance Basin.
Day 4 | July 22, 2024 | Skagway, Alaska
The tiny town of Skagway still looks like it did during the Klondike Gold Rush over 100 years ago— and today it remains an outpost for thrilling Alaskan adventure. An old-time street car ride along bustling Broadway Street reveals well-preserved buildings, including the state’s oldest hotel. You can see engraved walrus tusks at the Corrington Museum, or get lost in riveting historical reenactments around town. If outdoor adventure is more your thing, there are plenty of ways to amp up the adrenaline, from sledding with Alaskan Huskies on Laughton Glacier to rafting Lynn Canal, the longest fjord in North America.
Day 5 | July 23, 2024 | Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier
One of Alaska’s lesser-known gems, Endicott Arm Fjord marks the southern edge of Fords Terror Wilderness area. As you drift through its 30-mile-long stretch, you can’t help but be awed by the surrounding granite cliffs, mountain valleys and dozens of gushing waterfalls. Drifting icebergs, deep blue waters and a spectacular tidewater glacier only add to this natural spectacle’s appeal.
Day 6 | July 24, 2024 | At Sea
Day 7 | July 25, 2024 | Victoria, British Columbia
Victoria delivers a delightful blend of British pomp and outdoor adventure. Here you can admire Victorian architecture at Craigdarroch Castle and eat your way around Canada’s oldest Chinatown. Explore “Garden City” floral displays or go biking in the “Cycling Capital of Canada”. From orcas whistling in the harbor to glow-in-the-dark scorpions at the Bug Zoo, Victoria has every adventure covered.
Day 8 | July 26, 2024 | Seattle, Washington
