Dr. Porfiris was born and raised in Toronto and received his MD from the University of Toronto in 1994. He then finished the University of Toronto’s Family Medicine Residency Program at the Toronto East General site in 1996. He began to practice both family and emergency medicine at TEGH soon after graduating and then became interested in teaching while working in the emergency department. He became the director of Emergency undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in 2007 and has enjoyed the role since then. He was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto in 2005. Dr. Porfiris has had the privilege to teach medical students, residents and fellows in the Emergency Department at TEGH. He has been invited to speak on topics related to Emergency Medicine Care at the hospital rounds as well as city, provincial and national conferences. He lives in Toronto with his wife Eli and his 2 children, Stephanie and Teddy. He enjoys playing soccer, reading, and travelling. Dr. Porfiris believes the emergency department is the ideal place to teach trainees of all levels from medical students to specialty residents. The variety of case presentations, acuity, procedures, interpretation of lab testing and diagnostic imaging cannot be replicated in any other field. He believes being a great teacher makes you a better doctor and person.
Transgender Health & Sexual Medicine
Born, raised and trained in Winnipeg, Dr. Ted Jablonski is an award winning family physician based in Calgary. He has taught and practiced family medicine in rural Manitoba, Northern Saskatchewan and Northwestern Ontario before moving to Alberta. Ted is a sought after speaker, trainer, media spokesperson and CME creator / educator with many conference, radio, television and video credits. Jablonski is the medical director of Jablonski Health and Skipping Stone Foundation doing consultant work in sexual and transgender medicine for Southern Alberta for over a decade. He received an Award of Excellence from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2013 and was awarded Outstanding Family Physician of the Year by the University of Calgary Dept. of Family Medicine in 2015. Ted successfully ran, cycled and spoke across Canada in 2010 to raise awareness of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and the stigma of mental illness. “dr j” continues to moonlight as a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter with 10 indie CD releases, is a published author and passionate emerging playwright. He hosted the first annual Writing DOC Retreat in Banff Alberta in Nov 2019.
This course is designed for family physicians, specialists, and allied health care professionals. The aim is to provide evidence-based material, as well as practical and relevant clinical pearls that will be easy to implement into one’s own medical practice. Conference attendees will be invited to complete a pre-course Needs Assessment to assist the faculty with the development of their presentations.
