Endocrinology
Carol is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) at Memorial University in St. John’s, NL. She is a graduate of Dalhousie University Medical School in Halifax, NS, did an Internal Medicine residency at Memorial University, and then completed her fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Toronto. Carol has been on faculty at Memorial University since 1985. She is currently Division Chief of the Division of Endocrinology. Research interests include: evaluation of new diabetes treatments, prevention of Type 2 diabetes, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, the epidemiology of osteoporosis, and the genetics of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes. Carol is also past chair of the Royal College examination board in Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Respirology
Dr. Pearce Wilcox graduated from Queen’s University and did his Internal Medicine training at the University of Western Ontario and his Respiratory fellowship at the University of British Columbia. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and a member of the Division of Respiratory Medicine, Providence Health Care, St. Paul’s Hospital. He is the Medical Director of the Respiratory Function Laboratory at St. Paul’s Hospital and the Medical Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at St. Paul’s Hospital, University of British Columbia. His research interests are cystic fibrosis and pulmonary manifestations of connective tissue disorders. Dr. Wilcox received a teaching award from the University of British Columbia and he was the inaugural recipient of the Raja Abboud Investigator Award in 2016. This award recognizes a respiratory division member who has made a significant contribution to research, teaching, and, in particular, mentoring. Dr. Wilcox is the past president of the Canadian Thoracic Society.
This course is designed for family physicians, specialists, and allied health care professionals. The aim is to provide evidence-based material, as well as practical and relevant clinical pearls that will be easy to implement into one’s own medical practice. Conference attendees will be invited to complete a pre-course Needs Assessment to assist the faculty with the development of their presentations.

Dr. Carol Joyce (Endocrinologist from Newfoundland) and Dr. Pearce Wilcox (Respirologist from B.C.) have developed a newly updated program on topics that are both relevant and practical for family physicians, specialists and allied health care professionals. The program is designed to be evidence based with interactivity and attendee participation strongly encouraged.
Dr. Joyce will review the endocrinology issues that family doctors see in their offices such as thyroid diseases and diabetes as well as other not so commonly seen, but not to be missed, such as adrenal and pituitary diseases.
Dr. Wilcox will review and update new developments in asthma, COPD, an approach to chronic cough and other topics.
