Palliative Care

About The Speaker

Dr. Nicola Macpherson has been travelling and lecturing with Sea Courses since 2008. She completed Medical School in Ottawa in 1985 followed by a rotating internship at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC. Until 1989, she was a medical officer in the Canadian Forces at the National Defense Medical Centre in Ottawa. She finished her anaesthesia residency at UBC and became a Fellow of the Royal College in 1992. She worked for 12 years as an anaesthesiologist in Prince George and Maple Ridge, BC, including a brief stint in the Australian Outback. She returned to training as an R6 in Palliative Medicine in 2004-05. Since then, she has practiced full-time palliative medicine, initially throughout the Fraser Health Authority in BC. In 2014, realizing how hard it was to find locum coverage for palliative physicians in practice, she decided to become a locum in Regina, Calgary and in Fraser Health, so that colleagues can take much needed time off to recharge. She currently has faculty appointments in the Department of Medicine at UBC, and in Anaesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics at UBC, as well as Family Medicine, at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. She developed and helped present three palliative workshops in Ghana (West Africa) in 2013 and 2015.

Detailed Port Descriptions

 Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam, the beautiful capital of the Netherlands, has the wonderful atmosphere of a 17th-century city combined with the contemporary character of a modern metropolis. It is a treasure chest of superb architecture and is famous for its canals and extraordinary museums. Once you arrive on your cruise to Amsterdam, be sure to catch the city’s highlights, especially the iconic houses that straddle the snaking canal system of which the city is known for. When in Amsterdam, do as the Dutch and discover this first-class city on two wheels as this is one of the most bike-friendly places on the planet. When it comes to viewing the world’s great artistic masterpieces, you could hardly pick a better city. Pay a visit to the famous Van Gogh Museum and ponder the works of Holland’s favorite son. Afterwards, pop into a cozy cafe or tavern and let the charms of this city wash over you.

St. Petersburg, Russia

Although reportedly built to resemble such Western cities as London, Paris, and Vienna, one look at St. Petersburg's regal palaces and vast public squares is enough to tell you that it is truly in a class of its own. This grand city has always been entrenched and largely defined by its proximity to water. The Neva River snakes and bisects this city at every turn, necessitating the building of some 342 bridges to navigate pedestrian, motorist and boat traffic. Dubbed ‘The Venice of Russia’, there’s a wealth of history and culture to experience on a cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia. As a central location for the world’s greatest works of art, St. Petersburg has few rivals. The Russian Museum, where the city’s greatest works are housed, is a must visit as it spreads out over 4 lavish palaces still intact from its Tsarist past.

Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn has remained remarkably unchanged since its founding in 1154 A.D. The preservation of this city’s old world charm enables visitors to enjoy architectural marvels of centuries past, such as the soaring towers of Toompea Castle and the exquisite Russian Orthodox Cathedral. The exception is the delightfully modern pink Parliament building, visible from Palace Square.  With a boisterous nightlife, Tallinn stands as one of the most exciting cities of the former Soviet Union. Here, ancient church spires and baroque architecture intermingle with modern glass buildings that echo the many influences and cultures that have left their imprint throughout the centuries. There are so many amazing sites to explore on your Tallinn cruise.  Visit the imaginative Estonian Open-Air Museum, where ancient structures are arranged among the trees complete with actors in period garb. People watching doesn’t get much better than what you’ll find in Town Hall Square and if it’s animals you’d rather observe, visit the Tallinn Zoo where over 350 different species are housed.

Helsinki, Finland

Occupying a peninsula and several islands, this capital city's stunning structures surround some of the most spectacular bays you could ever hope to find. Stroll down broad, tree-lined streets, or take in the amazing neo-classically designed architecture in Senate Square.

Stockholm, Sweden

No fewer than 50 bridges connect this Swedish capital's 14 islands to its mainland. Visit the many parks, museums, and palaces or make your way through Gamla Stan, or Old Town, packed with historic buildings, shops, and cafés.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Whether strolling through blooming flowers in Tivoli Gardens, witnessing the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace or touring Kronborg Castle—the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet— it's easy to see why this once-humble fishing village grew to become the capital of Denmark.
