Prosthodonist

About The Speaker

Dr. Robert Carmichael is a prosthodontist with over 25 years of experience in oral rehabilitation of patients of all ages with complex needs including: cleft lip and palate, oligodontia, craniofacial anomalies, trauma, tumor resection, and other rare disorders. He has well-established track records in clinical practice, teaching, research, hospital administration and outreach to communities in northern Ontario where he supervises the care of individuals with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial disorders.

Dr. Carmichael is Chief of Dentistry and Director of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care Cleft Lip & Palate/Craniofacial Dental Programme at Holland Bloorview Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. He is also Coordinator of Prosthodontics at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. At both hospitals, Dr. Carmichael has pioneered dental treatments and technologies that have given several thousands of individuals with craniofacial and dental deformities the tools to participate fully in life. At Holland Bloorview, Dr. Carmichael leads a department fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, that offers the full range of specialized dental services, including pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral maxillofacial surgery and prosthodontics for children, adolescents and young adults with special health care needs. He has built a multidisciplinary department that integrates cutting-edge research and teaching of future oral healthcare specialists in the field of special care dentistry.

Dr. Carmichael is a life-long learner and educator. He received his undergraduate training at the University of British Columbia and his graduate training at the University of Zurich, Switzerland and the University of Toronto. At Holland Bloorview, Dr. Carmichael has created a department which has garnered recognition at every level – internationally, nationally, and provincially. In education, Dr. Carmichael has supervised the training of many dozens of general dentistry residents, pediatric dentistry residents, prosthodontics residents and oral and maxillofacial surgery residents who have since gone on to pursue leadership positions across the country and beyond. He has been recognized nationally and internationally, notably by the International Team for Implantology (ITI) in Switzerland with their designation of his department in 2007 as a Clinical Scholarship Centre (along with 19 other centres around the world). The primary goal of the ITI Clinical Scholarship Program is to help young clinicians further their training in implant dentistry. The program also aims to foster international exchange as an enriching educational experience. Scholars have come from countries around the world, including Germany, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, India, Thailand, UK and Japan. Again, under Dr. Carmichael’s leadership, Holland Bloorview was selected by the International Team for Implantology in 2009 to join an international network of 6 other educational institutions around the world, including Harvard, the aim of which is to enhance dental implant education worldwide through formal educational programs.

Dr. Carmichael has been tireless in his pursuit of knowledge for the betterment of patient care. He values scholarship and has spent his career advancing the study of dental implantology. He has lectured worldwide, has more than 50 publications, and has translated several texts from German to English.  Currently his research ranges in scope from documenting the impact of dental implant therapy on the quality of life of youth with congenitally missing teeth, to the effects of antidepressant therapy on the success of dental implants in youth, to the use of virtual reality technology in managing the behaviour of children with autism undergoing dental treatment, and to the effect of inflammation around dental implants on circulating immune cells.

Detailed Port Descriptions

Day 1 | January 26, 2025 | Benoa, Bali, Indonesia

Bali is a bucket-list destination that’s home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world, rich culture and traditions, and an incredible fusion of cuisines. With vibrant reefs close to shore, snorkeling from the white-sand beaches of the south is a must-do. No cruise to Bali is complete without a visit to Tanjung Benoa Beach. It’s located just north of the busier and more developed resort areas, and the calm surf and smooth sand make it an ideal beach for families. Just down the main road, you’ll find a vibrant fishing village and plenty of chances to experience the less-traveled side of this exotic wonderland. On your cruise to Bali, be sure to catch an authentic Kecak fire dance performance. Haggle for handmade art, jewelry, carvings, fabrics, and more at the bustling markets. And visit the Pura Lahur Uluwatu, an iconic Balinese temple perched more than 800 feet above the Indian Ocean. Nothing says “paradise” like a cruise to Bali with the best premium cruise line.

Day 2 | January 27, 2025 | Lombok, Indonesia

On the serene Indonesian island of Lombok, you’ll find that time seems to stand still. From breathtaking tropical waterfalls like Tiu Kelep to towering volcanoes and the coconut-strewn sandy beaches of the Gili Islands, unspoiled nature and beautiful landscapes abound here.  The people of Lombok are known for their hospitality and their synchronicity with the natural world. You’ll find amazing island surf spots next to welcoming fishing villages, hikes through rainforests, secluded beaches, coral reefs, and superb day spas where you can try traditional treatments. Rejuvenate your spirit and marvel at the lush natural beauty of Indonesia on a luxury cruise to Lombok with Celebrity Cruises.

Day 3 | January 28, 2025 | Celukan Bawang, Indonesia

On a Southeast Asia cruise, immerse yourself in Bali’s deep cultural roots with a visit to the old historic capital of Singaraja. Here, Dutch colonial architecture and Balinese beauty blend seamlessly. Discover hundreds of wild tropical bird species and reef fish in West Bali National Park. Learn about traditional Balinese customs and culture in the hill village of Munduk, surrounded by waterfalls and mountain trails and close to Bali’s most famous temple, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, set in a serene lake.

Days 4-5  | January 29—30, 2025 | At Sea

While at sea, take the time to recharge before the next adventure. Lounge by the pool, be spoiled at the spa, taste the delicacies or explore the venues on-board, until we arrive at the next amazing destination.

Day 6 | January 31, 2025 | Port Klang, Malaysia

Less than an hour from the Port is bustling Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's modern capital city. It rose up from the forbidding jungle terrain to become one of the most fascinating architectural landscapes on earth. A blend of native Malaysian, Chinese Imperial, and European influences has created a city that is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is alive with culture. Replete with fine dining, a fertile arts community and plenty of nightlife, Kuala Lumpur has earned a reputation as a must-see world destination.

Days 7—8 | February 1—2, 2025 | Penang, Malaysia

Often called the "Pearl of the Orient," this northern gateway to Malaysia is the country's oldest British settlement. Although this city is best known for its breathtaking beaches, sites such as Khoo Kongsi, a well-preserved ancestral Chinese clan house, and the Butterfly Farm, the world’s first tropical live butterfly exhibition, must-sees on the list for this amazing destination. Also visit Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the finest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, featuring among other things, a tortoise sanctuary.

Day 9 | February 3, 2025 | Langkawi, Malaysia

Let your imagination soar among the many magical myths and legends surrounding the 99 islands of Langkawi. Replete with ancient geological wonders like mysterious caves and mist-enrobed mountains, this premier vacation spot is a spectacular tropical paradise. The Pulau Payar Marine Park, located about 19 miles south of Langkawi, has everything from long, sandy white beaches and crystal-clear water to lush rain forests and exotic vegetation. The park includes an underwater coral garden, where you can swim and snorkel amidst multi-colored fish.

Days 10—11 | February 4—5, 2025 | Phuket, Thailand

Thailand's largest and most visited island, Phuket, offers gorgeous beaches lined with palm trees, plus fabulous coves and bays. Water sports include sailing, diving, and snorkeling. Golf enthusiasts will love the championship courses, while nature lovers will be thrilled by the tropical forests and waterfalls. Tour historic mansions and top off the day enjoying the extensive nightlife.

Day 12 | February 6, 2025 | At Sea

Day 13 | February 7, 2025 | Singapore, Singapore

At first glance, this diamond-shaped island just off the coast of Malaysia gleams with modernism and commercialism, making it seem more Western than Eastern. But as you continue to discover the city-state, you'll uncover the eclectic mix of cultures, religions, ancient treasures and British colonial impressions that give rise to a unique Singaporean identity. The cultural fusion is perhaps best expressed in Singapore's unofficial language, Singlish, a unique patois of English, Chinese and Malay.
