About The Speaker

Dr. Yazdan Mirzanejad is a clinical associate professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of British Columbia as well  an infectious diseases consultant at the Surrey Campus and Jim Pattison outpatient and surgical Centre. Dr. Mirzanejad is an MD graduate from Iran University of Medical Sciences in 1985 and completed his internship in 1989 at St. Paul’s Hospital at the University of British Columbia. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba in 1994, as well as a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1997. He also received board certification in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Gorgas institute in Peru in 2008 and American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He is co-site director for British Columbia in Geo-Sentinel surveillance study to screen travelers with febrile illnesses spearheaded by Centre for diseases Control in Atlanta, United States. He served as the chairman  for the Society of Tropical Medicine Expert Group of British Columbia since 2013. Dr. Mirzanejad has been the recipient of honor roll award in excellence for clinical teaching of under and postgrad trainees by UBC in 2016 and 2018,2020 & 2021.

About The Speaker

Dr. Mitch Shulman (or Dr Mitch as he’s known to his many fans on radio, TV and print) has always loved teaching and been actively involved in teaching medical students (he’s an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGill), residents (he’s an attending physician in the emergencies at the 2 campuses of the McGill University Health Center) and his peers. He teaches regularly at McGill’s Thursday evening lecture series and its lunchtime webinars and yearly at the McGill Refresher Course for Family Physicians and many other professional meetings. He is also actively engaged in educating the public. He appears daily on Bell Media Radio, monthly on Global TV Montreal’s This Morning and has a regular column in the largest English language weekly in Quebec, The Suburban. He volunteers his time speaking at many charitable events throughout the year. After completing his undergraduate training at Harvard, he came back home to Montreal to attend McGill Medical School and then do a residency in Emergency Medicine (where he was Chief Resident). He was among the first Royal College certified Emergency Medicine specialists (1983) and served as an examiner for the Royal College for many years. He was acting Director of the Emergency Department and served as its Research Director. He’s been a community doc and an occupational health physician. Currently, as well as his emergency department clinical responsibilities, he also serves as a medical scientist on an ethics review committee and works at the McGill Student Health Center. His commitment to his community runs deep. He was its Medical Director responsible for First Response and coached hockey to the Junior level. He still refs local ice hockey and plays. His philosophy on teaching has always been that we all have valuable knowledge to share and so he sincerely looks forward to hearing your own experiences as we share the learning at Sea Courses.

There are 2 presenters for this course, Dr. Yazdan Mirzanejad who is an Infectious disease specialist from Vancouver and Dr. Mitchell Shulman who is an emergency physician from Montreal. They have developed a program together that will appeal to both family physicians and specialists. Their programs are designed to be evidence based with interactivity and attendee participation is strongly encouraged. The Discoveries Lounge is located just outside Azamara’s main restaurant and this congenial bar is a favorite gathering place for pre- and post-dinner conversation and drinks. Istanbul, Turkey

East meets West in the storied city where Europe and Asia meet. Start in Sultanahmet Square and you can easily explore the intricate architecture of Topkapi Palace, the cathedral-turned-mosque-turned-museum of Hagia Sofia, and the brilliant blues of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Sample kebaps, mezes and more at the city’s endless restaurants and taverns where you’re sure to meet friendly locals and be caught up in their infectious love of life.

Varna, Bulgaria

Varna is a port city and seaside resort on Bulgaria's Black Sea, next to the coastal resorts of Golden Sands, St. Konstantin and Albena. It's famous for the "Gold of Varna," 6,000-year-old Thracian jewelry discovered in a necropolis, which is displayed inside the Archaeological Museum, along with Greek, Roman and Ottoman antiquities. A bar-lined waterfront promenade fronts 19th-century Primorski Park.

Burgas, Bulgaria

The beautiful port city of Burgas, Bulgaria, sits perched along the coastline of the Black Sea, with impressive roots that stretch deep into the past. You’ll find lots of archaeological sites and museums to explore and the charming town center is lively and walkable. Iconic landmarks, gorgeous churches, and delicious food. Constanta, Romania

A cultural and economic center for over 2,600 years, Constanta holds archaeological treasures and the charming atmosphere of the old town center. Its historical monuments, ancient ruins, grand casino, museums and shops, and proximity to beach resorts make it a seaside gem that isn’t on the map for most cruises. Plus, beautiful Bucharest is just a shore excursion away.

Odessa, Ukraine

Odessa is a port city on the Black Sea in southern Ukraine. It’s known for its beaches and 19th-century architecture, including the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater. The monumental Potemkin Stairs, immortalized in "The Battleship Potemkin," lead down to the waterfront with its Vorontsov Lighthouse. Running parallel to the water, the grand Primorsky Boulevard is a popular promenade lined with mansions and monuments.
