About The Speaker

Dr. Birman graduated from University of Toronto Medical School in 1980 and did postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, Respirology and Critical Care at various Toronto Hospitals.  He was part of the original “Group of Seven” internists at Scarborough Grace Hospital in 1985. He practiced general Respirology and was Director of ICU until retiring from critical care in 2007. He retrained in Sleep Medicine in the mid to late 90’s and has been the director and Quality Advisor of a number of sleep diagnostic and treatment centres. He currently has an active office practice seeing consultations and follow-up patients for Respiratory disorders and Sleep Medicine and practices telemedicine to Northwest Ontario for Sleep Disorders. He interprets sleep studies for the North Toronto Sleep Centre and the Medical Diagnostic and Consulting Sleep Clinic in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Dr. Corrie Graboski completed her Residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Alberta and a fellowship in Nerve conduction studies/EMG in 2007. She has been practicing in Victoria BC since that time. She has a special interest in treatment of headache. She is an associate professor at the University of British Columbia. She is part of numerous national and international clinical studies exploring new treatment options for migraine and is a faculty member of the Island Health Research Division. She loves spending time on the Island, hiking and enjoying nature with her husband, teenage twins and Shepherd.

  • Impact of headache/diagnosis of headache/pathophysiology of headache- new targets including CGRP
    • Understand the impact of headache on patients and their families including the interictal burden
    • Understand the basic diagnosis of types of headache based on the International Classification of Headache 3 and be aware of red flags to screen for using the SNOOP mnemonic
    • Understand the basic pathophysiology of migraine and new targets including CGRP
  • Acute treatment of migraine/medication overuse headaches/hormonal influences in headache (pregnancy, OCP)
    • Appreciate the need to treat migraine early considering the role of central and peripheral sensitization
    • Able to discuss the basic principals of acute migraine management based on the Canadian headache guidelines
    • Able to prescribe an individualized approach of rescue medications based on patients comorbidities and unique headache characteristics
    • Understand the new gepant medications and their role in the treatment of migraine

    • Appreciate the differences between pediatric and adult migraines and recognize common childhood migraine variants.
  • Concussion/headache attributed to trauma/whiplash
    • Diagnosis concussion and be able to provide evidence based advice for patients about safe return to sport.
    • Understand risk factors for the development of post concussive syndrome
    • Cite the new terminology for post traumatic headache (headache attributed to trauma)
    • Appreciate the symptoms of post concussive syndrome and develop an approach to treatment
