About The Speaker

Dr. Nemeth is a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGill University and a senior attending emergency physician at the McGill University Health Centre, where he has practiced since 2001. He holds concurrent appointments in the Departments of Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Critical Care, and serves as Trauma Team Leader at both the Montreal General Hospital and the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Nemeth served as Emergency Department Director at the Montreal General Hospital for nearly eight years and has been a central architect of the department’s educational identity across multiple decades. His leadership has shaped residency training, fellowship development, and the academic culture of emergency medicine at McGill.

A dedicated educator he is the creator and director of McGill’s Trauma Fellowship for Emergency Physicians, the General Emergency Medicine Fellowship, and the Resuscitation Fellowship — programs that have trained clinicians from across Canada and internationally. He has delivered keynote lectures globally at internationally recognized conferences ranging from the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia to Singapore and Malaysia.

His scholarly contributions include more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and active editorial roles across leading emergency medicine journals. His clinical and academic focus centres on trauma, resuscitation, pediatric emergency medicine, airway management, and cognitive performance in high-acuity environments.

- Describe the three types of cognitive load (intrinsic, extraneous, germane) and identify at least two clinical workflows in family medicine or emergency settings where extraneous load impairs decision-making quality.
- Apply evidence-based strategies — including cognitive offloading, structured handoff tools, and attention management techniques — to reduce error risk and sustain professional performance during high-demand shifts or clinic days.

Anaphylaxis – Current updates on Definitions and Treatment Paradigms
- Apply the updated diagnostic criteria for anaphylaxis — including recognition of biphasic reactions and atypical presentations.

- Recognize the diagnostic pitfalls of anchoring on urinary tract infection as the default diagnosis in older adults presenting with altered mental status or functional decline, and identify the atypical presentations of serious alternative diagnoses commonly missed in this population.
- Develop a systematic, geriatric-attuned assessment approach — including delirium screening, medication reconciliation, and frailty considerations — to guide safe diagnostic workup and disposition decisions for older ED patients.

PE- Myths, Semantics, Novelties
- Deconstruct prevalent myths in PE management — including the conflation of subsegmental PE with high-risk disease, and misconceptions about anticoagulation duration — while applying current risk stratification tools (PERC, Wells, PESI) to guide proportionate investigation in both ED and outpatient contexts.
- Integrate recent advances in PE care — including direct oral anticoagulant selection, catheter-directed therapy thresholds, into individualized treatment decisions across the spectrum from low-risk outpatient-eligible PE to intermediate- and high-risk presentations.

Mild TBI- An Update on the Oxymoron
- Critically examine the paradox embedded in the term "mild TBI" — including the disconnect between injury severity nomenclature and real-world functional outcomes — and briefly review validated clinical decision rules to identify which patients require CT neuroimaging versus safe discharge with return precautions.
- Summarize current evidence on post-concussive syndrome recognition, the updated approach to rest versus active rehabilitation, and the role of structured follow-up in primary care and the ED for patients with mild TBI across pediatric and adult populations.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 | Barcelona, Spain

A cruise from Barcelona is one of the best ways to experience all the brightest jewels of the Mediterranean — but it’s also a great opportunity to spend some time discovering one of the coolest cultural hubs in western Europe. This lively seaside city checks all the boxes — history, culture, amazing food, a thriving art scene and so much more. When you visit Barcelona, you can start every day with a steamy cortado in a charming sidewalk café. After that, the options for adventure are endless. Swim with sharks at Aquarium de Barcelona, one of the largest aquariums in Europe. Check out ancient Roman relics at the Barcelona City History Museum, located in the vibrant Gothic Quarter. Make a reservation to see a sultry flamenco show. And when hunger hits, head to Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, a pilgrimage site for foodies. It was a covered market back in the 1200s. Now it’s one of the top food markets in the world and a must-visit stop before your cruise out of Barcelona. Your ship departs promptly at 5:00 pm, so plan to arrive at least 2-3 hours early to account for checking in and boarding protocols. During this time, many of the ship's amenities are open and operating, so feel free to start your vacation early.

Day 2 | Palma De Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca is the perfect place to immerse yourself in history and beauty. Go back in time to the 14th century at Bellver Castle, with its mix of Arab arches and Roman-inspired fortification. Catch a wave on the golden sands of El Arenal beach. Then, tuck into cocarrois, a local take on empanadas, or cool off in the quiet gardens and medieval ruins of the 10th-century Arab Baths.

Day 3 | At Sea

While at sea, take time to recharge before the next adventure. Lounge by the pool, be spoiled at the spa, dine at any of the onboard restaurants or explore the thrills on each deck until we arrive at the next destination.

Day 4 | Florence / Pisa (La Spezia), Italy

While traveling to Florence or Pisa, enjoy a scenic drive through the celebrated Tuscan countryside with its rolling hills, olive and cypress trees and medieval villages. After climbing Pisa's Leaning Tower, explore the atmospheric white, rose and red piazzas (squares). In Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, you can marvel at the paintings in the Uffizi Gallery and cross the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge, packed with local boutiques to poke your head into.

Day 5 | Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Experience la dolce vita in The Eternal City— recalling the glory days of Ancient Rome and twirling forks full of pasta in a trattoria. Stand in awe of paintings by Italian masters at Villa Borghese. Soak up Trastevere’s backstreet charms. Discover Vatican City’s spiritual legacy. Or ride past centuries-old basilicas in a three-wheeled Ape Calessino.

Day 6 | Naples / Capri, Italy

The third-largest Italian city and one of the oldest in Europe, Naples combines deep history and modern verve. Check out the extravagant Royal Palace of Naples, the former home of the royal family, with its beautiful tapestries and frescoes. People-watch from a streetside cafe in the Sanita district with a glass of wine and slice of classic margherita pizza.

Day 7 | At Sea

Day 8 | Barcelona, Spain

Afternoons in Barcelona are best spent eating Spanish tapas in a cozy bar. Then take a Gaudí-inspired architecture crawl to see modernist wonders like Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, Park Güell and the awe-inspiring La Sagrada Família. Explore medieval dockyards at the Maritime Museum— or throw on an apron and learn the centuries-old art of Catalan cuisine in a chef-led cooking class. The cruise might have ended, but there are still some great activities to enjoy in the area. If you flew into this port, be mindful of your departure flight time and plan accordingly.
