About The Speaker

Jon Davine, MD, FCFP, FRCP(C) is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University, with a cross appointment in the Department of Family Medicine.  His outpatient psychiatry practice focuses on liaising with primary care physicians in the “shared care” model.  For a number of years, he has taught courses in behavioural sciences to family medicine residents and to family doctors in the community.  He has lectured nationally and internationally on this topic.  He is a past Chair of the Council of Psychiatric Continuing Education (COPCE), which is affiliated with the Canadian Psychiatric Association.  He was a past Council Member and  Treasurer of the Ontario Psychiatric Association. He has co-edited a book called  “Psychiatry in Primary Care, a concise Canadian pocket guide”, in 2011, with the second edition in 2019. He was made a Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 2012. He was made a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2013. He was made a Distinguished Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 2014. He was made a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2018. He was made a Fellow of the Canadian College of Family Physicians in 2021. He has received a number of educational awards over the years, including from the Association of Chairs of Psychiatry in Canada (ACPC), and the Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME).

Dr. Harry Karlinsky obtained his degree in Psychiatry from the University of Toronto and his Masters in Neuroscience degree from the University of London, England. He is currently a Clinical Professor within the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia. For over three decades, Dr. Karlinsky has been a longstanding and prodigious contributor to the field of continuing medical education (CME) and professional development. His initiatives have consistently reflected the innovative integration of the humanities into CME activities, such as his role as the founding and ongoing director of the award-winning ’Frames of Mind’ Mental Health Film Series. As an alumnus of Simon Fraser University’s Writers’ Studio, Dr. Karlinsky has also made original contributions to Canadian literature. His first novel, The Evolution of Inanimate Objects, was longlisted for the Wellcome Trust Book Prize which celebrates books which illuminate the theme of health, illness and medicine. His second novel, The Stonehenge Letters, was selected by Quill and Quire as one of the best books of 2014. Dr. Karlinsky’s honours include Baycrest Hospital’s Munk Geriatric Award; the CPA/COPCE Award for outstanding Continuing Medical Education Activity within Canada; the Lil Hewton Bursary Award to conduct archival research related to the history of psychiatry; the inaugural UBC Faculty of Medicine Innovation in CME award; the 2023 Association of Chairs of Psychiatry in Canada Annual Award for Creative Professional Activity; and the 2024 Canadian Psychiatric Association’s Paul Patterson Innovation in Education Leadership Award.
