Dr. Steven Poirier is a dedicated Family Physician with 22 years of experience providing high-quality, compassionate care to patients in a variety of settings. He has practiced rural family medicine and rural emergency medicine for 3 years after graduating and then transitioned into a larger center and practiced both, Hospital in-patient Medicine as a hospitalist, and Family Medicine in the office setting.  This has allowed him to acquire both the knowledge and skills essential to all aspects of care form prevention, to emergency to acute and subacute care, as well as medicine for all age groups from birth to end of life care.
With a commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements, Dr. Poirier has received extensive training in Longevity Medicine and Men’s Vitality Medicine.  He is also a regular teacher which allows him to keep up to date in an ever-changing world of medical information.

Teaching:
Dr. Poirier has been involved in teaching the current and the next generation of physician since 2013:

  • Associate professor for the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto at the level of Lecturer.
  • Preceptor through the Rural Ontario Medicine Program and one the preceptors for the francophone stream of the medicine programme at the University of Ottawa.
  • Preceptor through the medical school at University College Cork in Ireland that is affiliated with Medcan.

About The Speaker

Dr. Mitch Shulman (or “Dr Mitch” as he’s known to those who follow him on radio, TV and in print) has always loved teaching. He’s an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGill and an attending physician in the emergencies of the 2 campuses of the McGill University Health System teaching medical students and residents. He has presented at McGill’s Thursday Evening Lecture series and its Lunchtime Webinars, at the McGill Refresher Course for Family Physicians and at many other professional meetings. He’s an ACLS Master Instructor. He’s also actively engaged in educating the public. He appears daily on Bell Media Radio, weekly on Global TV’s, Montreal This Morning and is an award-winning columnist with a weekly column in the largest English language weekly in Quebec, The Suburban. He volunteers his time speaking at many charitable events.

After completing his undergraduate training at Harvard, he came back home to Montreal to attend McGill Medical School and then did a residency in Emergency Medicine (where he was Chief Resident). He was among the first Royal College certified Emergency Medicine specialists (1983) and served as an examiner for the Royal College. He was acting Director of the Emergency Department and served as its Research Director. He’s been a community doc and an occupational health physician. Currently, as well as his emergency department clinical responsibilities, he also serves as a medical scientist on an ethics review committee and works at the McGill Student Health Center. His commitment to his community runs deep. He was its Medical Director responsible for First Response and coached hockey to the Junior level. He still refs local ice hockey and plays. His philosophy on teaching has always been that we all have valuable knowledge to share and so he sincerely looks forward to hearing from you as we share the learning at this Sea Courses event.

From Risk to Response: Cardiovascular Disease and Acute Care Essentials

  Sea Courses is pleased to invite you to a 7 Night Continuing Medical Education land program in Grenada from March 15 to 22, 2026. Dr. Steven Poirier and Dr. Mitch Shulman have presented many times in the past for CME AWAY. They have developed a highly interactive educational program that will be of interest to family physicians, specialists, and allied health professionals.   Dr.  Poirier has been trained in Family Medicine and has been practicing medicine since 2012. He has practiced in a variety of settings including Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, and General Family Medicine in the office setting. For the past 2 years, he has been practicing as an executive health provider at Medcan in Toronto. Steven has been involved in teaching the next generation of physicians since 2013 by being an associate professor for the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto at the level of Lecturer. Dr. Poirier has also trained as a Chiropractor.   Dr. Poirier will address Dyslipidemia, Atherosclerosis, Coronary Artery Disease and Cardiovascular Imaging.   Dr. Mitch Shulman (or "Dr Mitch" as he’s known to those who follow him on radio, TV and in print) has always loved teaching.     • Understanding the current biomarkers/modifiers in the guidelines: a closer at Lp(a) and ApoB

  • Pathophysiology of Atherosclerosis

    • Understanding the timeline to plaque rupture and end organ damage.
  • Endothelial Dysfunction, inflammation, and Coronary Artery Disease

    • Understanding how to use the new biomarkers for further risk stratification and possible earlier initiation of treatment for prevention.
  • Cardiovascular Imaging
    • Understanding what the available options are for screening in terms of cardiovascular imaging specifically: The carotid intima-media thickness test (CIMT) and Coronary Artery Calcium Score
    • Understanding the role for The carotid intima-media thickness test (CIMT) and Coronary Artery Calcium Score  in early detection, which may indicate the need for a more aggressive approach to managing the risk factors associated with heart disease and stroke.
  • Diet and Lifestyle coaching for disease prevention
    • Looking at current activity guidelines and simple dietary changes that are beneficial
    • Understanding motivational coaching for lifestyle changes and medical intervention for prevention of disease
