Dentist
Dr. Frank Stechey, after 30 years in practice, retired becoming a clinical restorative and oral diagnosis treatment coordinator with University of Toronto and George Brown College’s dental faculties, plus an examiner & invigilator for foreign-trained dentists seeking Canadian licensure, a Council member and past president with Ontario’s Regulator, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) and an international speaker for intra-professional law enforcement and health care agencies & associations.
With interests in both ‘forensic’ and ‘sports’ dentistry, he recognized differences in patterned injuries between accidental & non-accidental trauma on patients/clients of all ages, becoming a Court expert witness for both civil and criminal cases of: homicides, product liability, human trafficking, intimate partner/spousal & domestic violence, especially senior and child abuse.
A consultant for many hospital emergency rooms, Children’s Aid Societies, retirement homes assisting multi-disciplinary municipal, provincial / state & federal / international law enforcement colleges & social services in dentistry’s role in abuse recognition he is recognized as a Fellow in eight international organizations including the International College of Dentists, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences & Academy for Sports Dentistry. His passion is to assist and educate other multi-disciplinary health care & law enforcement professionals on dentistry’s mandated & investigative roles in ‘forensics,’ especially on abusive pattern recognition to help prevent abuse / violence within every community.
Nephrology
Dr. Tobe trained in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the University of Toronto, then joined the Division of Nephrology at Sunnybrook. He is now a Professor of Medicine at both the University of Toronto and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, where he was the inaugural Heart and Stroke Foundation Chair of Aboriginal and Rural Health Research. In addition to a busy hypertension and nephrology clinical practice, he is also the University of Toronto Nephrology Postgraduate Fellowship Director. His main research interests are the Implementation Science of dissemination of cardiovascular focused clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Tobe was chair of the Canadian Hypertension Education Program from 2008 to 2012 and on the board of directors of Hypertension Canada until recently, and remains co-chair of the Canadian Cardiovascular Harmonized National Guidelines Endeavour (C-CHANGE). Dr. Tobe also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Hypertension Specialists Program. Dr. Tobe has had continuous peer reviewed funding for 25 years, has received many teaching awards and other career distinctions and has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and has led and participated in peer reviewed and investigator initiated multicentered international research collaborations.
Dr. Tobe’s goals as an educator are to stimulate in health care providers, excitement and interest in lifelong learning, related to cardiovascular chronic disease management to improve the vascular health of the people they care for. His current research focus is implementation science to facilitate and evaluate the timely translation of guideline recommendations into best practice changes by updating the knowledge, skills and attitudes of health care professionals.
This course is designed for family physicians, specialists, and allied health care professionals. The aim is to provide evidence-based material, as well as practical and relevant clinical pearls that will be easy to implement into one’s own medical practice. Conference attendees will be invited to complete a pre-course Needs Assessment to assist the faculty with the development of their presentations.
