Multi-Disciplinary Medical Doctor
After two flying tours as a Canadian military pilot, Dr. Robert (Bob) Banks received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Toronto in 1986. Following his internship and four years practicing as a flight surgeon and ER physician, Bob completed the United States Navy Residency of Aerospace Medicine. While a resident, he conducted human-subject research that identified an unknown physiological mechanism that caused loss of consciousness of pilots in flight.
Dr. Banks’ professional activities over many years were focused on human flight, and medical and engineering forensic investigations of trauma. He led an investigation into the cause and mechanism of injuries experienced by the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia when it crashed in 2003. His publications are found in the journal of the Aerospace Medical Association, aviation and space medicine textbooks, and on the NASA website.
He was recently presented with the William Randolph Lovelace Award by the Society of NASA Flight Surgeons for his career contributions to space and aviation flight safety.
Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Dr. Gil Lichtshein is Board Certified in General and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
His clinical practice in Boca Raton, FL specializes in a variety of disorders including mood disorders, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), Autism Spectrum Disorders and attention deficit disorders (ADD/ADHD). He also performs forensic evaluations which involves psychiatry and the law. He also is a Spravato and TMS practitioner. TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a non-pharmacological, non-invasive form of neuromodulation which uses highly focused, MRI-strength alternating magnetic pulses to target the brain in those areas where under-activity or dysfunction is linked to depression or other neuropsychiatric disorders. Spravato (esketamine) is the only FDA-approved nasal spray for treatment resistant depression and is an NMDA receptor antagonist that is believed to work differently by acting on a pathway in the brain that affects glutamate. He also in on faculty at the Florida Atlantic University Charles E Schmidt College of Medicine and teaches a Foundation of Medicine course to first and second year medical students which teaches students the skills in performing history and physical exam on patients. |
This course is designed for family physicians, specialists, and allied health care professionals. The aim is to provide evidence-based material, as well as practical and relevant clinical pearls that will be easy to implement into one’s own medical practice. Conference attendees will be invited to complete a pre-course Needs Assessment to assist the faculty with the development of their presentations.
