Additional Noteworthy Features

Ashford Castle was founded in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman De Burgo family following their defeat of the native O’Connors of Connaught. After more than 350 years under the De Burgo family, Ashford passed into the hands of Sir Richard Bingham, Lord President of Connaught. Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness purchased Ashford in 1852 and extended the estate to 26,000 acres building new roads and planting thousands of trees. The Castle was then purchased by Noel Haggard in 1939. Haggard established the Castle as a first class hotel renowned for the provision of country pursuits. In 1970, Ashford Castle was bought by John Mulcahy who oversaw its complete restoration and expansion, doubling its size, building a golf course and developing the grounds. Finally, to bring us to the current chapter, in May 2013, Ashford Castle was purchased by Red Carnation Hotels, who began a major restoration to bring it back to its former glory.
